About the VA DME Team
What We Do To Help the VA
The Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs (OPIA) within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) aims to develop creative ways to support government communication with Veterans. Within the OPIA is the Digital Media Engagement Team (DME) Team, a group of professionals who champion innovative ideas and creative thinking. The VA DME team has leveraged the skills and talents of hundreds of interns to become one of the U.S. federal government’s most successful student intern teams with a primary focus on social media content production including writing, graphic design, editing, and video production for the VA’s main social media outlets. Important supporting roles include opportunities in human resource management, project management, research, fact checking, web design, web development, and more.
To help support the OPIA’s aims, the DME Team began in 2016 as a collaborative effort with over 100 interns from the Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS) Program. Through this collaboration, interns all over the US have gained valuable resume experience while aiding the DME team. Many VA channels including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and the VAntage Point blog feature the work of these interns. Interns also play a key role in developing the VA’s Borne the Battle podcast.
Due to high satisfaction with the performance of VSFS interns in the first year of the program, the DME Team has expanded its program in subsequent years with larger and larger teams. This website, created in the third year of the program (2018-2019), and expanded significantly in 2019-2020 is one byproduct of this growing collaboration between DME Staff and VSFS interns.
