DME Intern Spotlight: Afton Matthews

The DME internship thrives due to the dedication and skills of our interns. In these posts highlighting the work of individual interns, you can get a sneak peek into what they do, how it’s developing them, and whether DME might be a good fit for you too! If you’re interested in joining us, please see the link at the bottom of the blog post.

This intern spotlight focuses on Afton Matthews, the Department Head for the Human Resources Department. Having worked her way up from intern to Department Head in less than six months, Afton explains her role on the DME team and how it has helped her job prospects.

What do you contribute to the DME team and how do you further their goals?

My purpose as the Head of Human Resources at DME is to enhance the value interns gain from their time here. I supervise a department that focuses on job-hunting skills, writing job descriptions, performing needs analyses, writing training materials, outlining policies and procedures, and spearheading recruitment efforts.

How does your work at DME help you reach your professional goals?

I recently sat down to write my government resume (one of our interns created a document to guide you through this process!) and I have nearly a page dedicated to the things I’ve done at DME. Though I have an education that correlates highly to HR, this position allowed me to put a lot of that knowledge into practice.

Why would you recommend DME to others?

For me, working on a virtual team is exceptionally helpful for myriad reasons; first and foremost is the flexibility that comes with it. It’s also extremely important to me because it demonstrates my ability to self-motivate and shows that I can lead and work on virtual teams. As more companies acknowledge the value of remote positions, I find that having experience working remotely is key in this emerging market.
