Get to Know a Human Resources Intern

Sneak Peak: Get to know Catherine Del Fierro, a human resources intern with the Digital Media Engagement (DME) team! She tells us about her academic background and gives us her best internship advice.

Catherine Del Fierro is a human resources department intern from Southern California. She is a senior at Cal Poly Pomona studying business administration with an emphasis in management and human resources. At school, Catherine helps students improve their professional communication skills as a business communications teaching assistant.

Catherine learned about the Digital Media Engagement (DME) internship program at her school’s career fair and discovered that there was an internship in the human resources department. Human resources is a broad field, and the internship peaked her interest because it gave her the opportunity to work in a specific aspect of the field. The DME human resources department works behind the scenes to make sure the DME program runs smoothly so that all interns have a positive experience. As an intern, Catherine works with the on-boarding and metrics teams. She is currently working on updating the internship welcome packet and creating a survey that will be sent out to the leadership team in order to determine what the DME mission statement should be. Catherine also helps out the transcription department in making SubRip Subtitle files for the VA’s YouTube video captions.

The business communications class that Catherine assists with equipped her with the virtual communication skills that are key to succeeding as a DME intern. Catherine’s goal for her time in the human resources department is to leave a lasting impression and take advantage of all the opportunities that the internship offers. She advises future interns to be transparent and keep an open line of communication with the leadership team. They are here to help all interns and want to answer any questions you may have!
