Evans was recruited as a military nurse in 1966 to finish nursing school on a stipend from the Army in exchange for two years of service.

She arrived in Vietnam in 1968 as a member of the 36th Evacuation Hospital where she worked 12-14 hour shifts in 105˚ temperatures, caring for child bomb victims.

Evans transferred to the 71st Evacuation Hospital, farther north and on the front lines. Evans cared for patients while the hospital was constantly under fire and would protect them before taking shelter herself.

After leaving the Army in 1972, Evans helped launch the Vietnam Women's Memorial Project and currently serves as the president of the Vietnam Women's Memorial Foundation.
