John Kinsel Sr.

Kinsel enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, completing initial recruit training in California, where Phillip Johnston recruited him to the Navajo code talkers program

John Kinsel Sr.

As a code talker in the 3rd Marine Division, Kinsel served from 1943-1945 in Iwo Jima, Guam, and Bougainville Island, creating codes and transcribing messages

John Kinsel Sr.

Kinsel was injured as a result of bomb shrapnel at the battle of Iwo Jima and was awarded a Purple Heart in 1989. He also received a Congressional Silver Medal in 2001

After the war, Kinsel was honorably discharged in 1946 and worked as an instructional aide at a school in Arizona, where he had to walk 36 miles each way due to lack of local transportation
